Creating a Community Site

Build a BuddyPress community site with member directories, group showcases, activity feeds, and user dashboards using WBcom Essential.

What You’ll Build

A complete community site with:

Homepage for visitors (non-logged-in users) Dashboard for members (logged-in users) Member directory page Group directory page Activity page with forums

Time required: 45-60 minutes

Requirements:

WordPress 6.0+ BuddyPress 10.0+ (activated) WBcom Essential (activated) bbPress (optional, for forums)

Part 1: Community Homepage

For Visitors (Logged-Out)

Create a page that encourages visitors to join:

Hero Section Add a Slider block Slides showing community benefits CTA: “Join the Community”

Member Showcase Add a Heading block: “Meet Our Members” Add a Members Carousel block Settings: Members per view: 4 Order by: Most Active Show friend button: No (for visitors) Autoplay: On

Group Discovery Add a Heading block: “Popular Groups” Add a Groups Grid block Settings: Columns: 4 Max groups: 8 Order by: Most Popular Show join button: Yes (links to register)

Testimonials Add a Testimonial Carousel block Include member testimonials about the community

Final CTA Add a CTA Box block Heading: “Ready to Join?” Button: “Create Free Account”

For Members (Logged-In)

Use WordPress conditional blocks or create a separate dashboard page:

Part 2: Member Directory

Create a dedicated page for browsing members.
